Reading
1. DEAR-Students read for the first 10 minutes of the day in class. Once a week, they use this time to go 'book shopping' in the classroom library and fill up their bookbags with great new books for the week.
2. READ-ALOUD-Twice a day, a book is read to the class for complete enjoyment with no follow-up activity. Benefits include learning that reading is fun, modeling fluency and thinking-aloud. All types of texts are read, including fiction and non-fiction.
3. WHOLE-GROUP READING STRATEGY LESSON-A text will be read with a follow-up lesson, such as comparing and contrasting characters, sequencing events, summarizing, predicting, and inferencing.
4. DAILY 5-Students make 5 choices of literacy activities daily in the classroom, in the order they choose: read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work. Each center includes a variety of activities from which to choose, allowing for student choice and motivation in independent learning. During these independent literacy activities, the teacher is conducting guided reading groups.
5. GUIDED READING-Students read in a small group at the teacher table with other students on their same reading level. Reading assessments are given frequently so a student moves up a level and joins a new group.

Writing
1. MORNING MESSAGE-The teacher writes a message to the class, usually in friendly letter format. Elements incorporated include phonics, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The message is often interactive, with students helping to write the message or to correct errors.
2. WHOLE GROUP LESSON-The teacher models a particular type of writing, such as a friendly letter, descriptive writing, or personal narrative. The class then uses the majority of the time to write that same type of writing. Class ends with a share time. We go through the writing process (prewrite, draft, edit, revise, publish, share) weekly and greatly value writing for and sharing with our audience.
3. WRITING WORKSHOP-We work as a class family of writers on a particular type of writing, helping one another in our work. We publish one piece a week-it is
